UPDATE (2012) – Now smartphones are very powerful multimedia devices and newer Symbian^3 phones have native support to play .avi files. So the following post may be considered as (almost) outdated….
With limited set of basic functionality, mobile’s inbuilt video players have always disappointed users. From the times of Real player in early Symbian phones to today’s sophisticated touch screen smartphones, they have not changed much. Many third party video player apps tried to compensate for this. SmartMovie player is one such app that was launched in early Symbian era and still remains the most popular Video player among smartphone users (Especially Symbian phones). According to an independent survey, SmartMovie is one of the 5 most used applications in Symbian phones in all categories. Such is the popularity of SmartMovie that it has won many awards in various polls and events (Like Best Application Award 2006 and Handango Champions Award etc). Following are some of its salient features:
1. Easy Brightness and Zoom controls during video playback
2. Contrast and Saturation settings
3. One click Portrait/Landscape controls during video playback.
4. Video Subtitles support
5. Plays .avi, .3gp, .mp4 and .flv videos (In 4.XX version)
6. A good PC video converter (SmartMovie Converter) is also provided to convert videos to compatible mobile (.avi) format
SmartMovie is available only for Symbian (All Editions including Symbian^3) and Windows Mobile.
You can download the trial version (or buy full version) from Official Site or from here (Version 4.15).
Install SmartMovie in your phone and SmartMovie Converter in your PC. Run both and unlock the convertor. Before converting any video, tweak the settings in convertor according to your device. Note however that if you can’t convert a specific format video (Like .flv or .mov) by SmartMovie converter then it is because of missing video codecs in your PC, you will need to install an all-in-one K-Lite Codec Pack to solve this problem. Send the converted videos to phone via Bluetooth or Data cable. Run SmartMovie in phone and go to Files/Menu/Rescan file system (Make sure you do it everytime a new video is added to phone). Play and enjoy….
