Opera mini has been updated to version 5. Many new features have been added but to be frank, its speed has suffered badly due to all the extra utilities. I also updated Mini on my Nokia N70 but after the initial excitement it became a nuisance to operate and within next 2 days I reverted to good old Opera Mini 4. Following are my woes –
1. In comparison to previous versions, OM 5 is very slow to operate (At least on Symbian S60v2 phones like my N70). It takes ages to start and even get stucked when I work a bit longer (The cache and history pile up). Everything including Menu, shortcuts, transition between Zoom and Normal mode works at a snail’s pace. It is like Windows Vista running on 512 MB RAM. (Paradoxically “Shutdown/Exit” time is faster than previous versions).
2. The password manager although useful but becomes a pain when you have more than one login name and password for the same site (As is usually the case now a days). When a username and password is “Saved” you can not login with a different ID and password until the previously stored ID and password is replaced.
The developers should understand the simple fact that the visual design is welcome as a secondary feature but certainly not at the cost of speed and the primary function of an app. Hope Mini’s developer team will hear and rectify above faults in upcoming versions.
UPDATE: The speed (slowness) issue has been resolved in the updated version (5.1) of Opera Mini.

I agree with you completely. Sure my Nokia N70 only has 1.8mb of ram, but they’ve really forgotten about us S60v2 users. I would to add that, the selecting of text is a great new feature, but it can’t be used in conjunction with the built-in copy and paste feature of the S60 device. Also, while inputting text such as this text box here, it’s extremely slow to type and I also can’t use predictive text unless I use full screen edit. It’s nice to still see the webpage but at a cost of speed and easier typing. And when I use full screen edit, then I can’t see anything with some Nokia themes with a black background, because the text is always black. So annoying. Opera Mini 4 is still the best, at least for S60v2 phones.
