Opera Mini 4.2 IS UPDATED TO A “COSMETICALLY” NICER VERSION 4.3 (“anamingwar”)

Yesterday mobile and tech blogs were buzzing about the release of Opera Mini 6 and Opera Mobile 11. However almost everyone missed the update of Opera Mini 4.2 to version 4.3 (full name – 4.3.24214/hifi/anamingwar). I noticed this while checking the download page of Opera Mobile. I have both Mini 4.2 (java/J2ME) and 5.1 (beta for Symbian) on my Nokia N95. Unfortunately Opera has not incorporated the basic function of automatic update notification or manual “Check for update” option (like that in Bolt and UC browser) leaving users no other choice but to check m.opera.com to know whether a new version is out or not. Hope this issue will be catered in upcoming versions.

Anyway the new version (Mini 4.3) in the 4.xx series rather looks like a polished and glossy 4.2 (hybrid of version 4 and 5). Following are my views about it:

1. The start up screen has been changed to look more like Mini 5 and 6

2. “Start page” has not changed much except the visual appearance which is more appealing and glossy.

3. The menu color has changed from white to black

4. Functionally I did not notice any significant changes (Fonts, settings etc) except a “Share page” option – with its help you can share any page (loaded in Mini) at Facebook, twitter or My Opera. (To do this load a page and go to “Menu/Tools/Share Page”, a page will open showing facebook, twitter and My Opera tabs to choose from)

5. No noticeable improvement in page loading time (unlike the new Mini 6 which has improved at this front)

To sum up in one line: Opera Mini version 4.3 is a cosmetically improved avatar of version 4.2 In my opinion Opera has kept alive the Mini 4.xx only for low end java phones (and BlackBerry) and this version tries to give them a taste of the visual delight of Mini 5
