Nokia (Ovi) Browser For S40/Asha Phones Updated to Version 2.0

Nokia (Ovi) Browser Beta was recently updated to version 2.0 Formerly known as Ovi browser, it is Nokia’s trademark mobile web browser for feature phones (S40 and Asha Series). Nokia Browser uses the data compression technology similar to Opera Mini to reduce data transfers (upto 90%) and thus the surfing cost. Requested websites are compressed and optimized according to tiny mobile screens at a proxy server before being fetched to the device. However the whole process is so fast that user does not even get aware of it. In Nokia’s own words –

That makes loading web sites faster, and cheaper – in fact, our cloud-accelerated browsing makes loading web sites up to three times faster. If you’re on a pay-per-use contract you’ll enjoy cheaper browsing, or if you’re on an operator data plan you’ll be able to do more web surfing without exceeding your monthly usage limits.

Nokia has also introduced “a little” multitasking element to S40 phones via this new version of browser – you can switch between text messages and the web browser. Plus you can save music, video etc via the new Download Manager and surf the net at the same time.

Other new features in the version 2.0 include –

A new improved, intuitive UI with one-click access to some popular sites at the start page (much like UC Browser)

Easy sharing of URLs at social networks (Facebook or Twitter) – now you can also share any page you like at Facebook/Twitter (or Weibo/Ren Ren in China) right from the new Nokia Browser 2.0

You can also install Web Apps in Nokia browser to increase its usability – there are thousands of Web Apps available free. According to Nokia more than 35 million Web Apps have been downloaded by S40 users since their launch in mid 2011 with ‘Free Wi-Fi Locator’ being the most downloaded one (at over 2 million).
