Samsung must take a clue or two from the newly announced Asus ZenFone 3 Zoom. As the name indicates, Zenfone 3 Zoom is a camera-centric phone but unlike other phones in this category, it is unbelievably super-slim. And I mean wafer-thin, considering the hardware it packs in just 7.99mm body thickness. A dual-camera module with optical zoom (and all sort of fancy optics) plus a huge 5000mAh battery are crammed with perfection in this phone – seriously kudos to Asus. Other than size, it’s all about the camera for ZenFone 3 Zoom. Here are all the salient tid-bits about the imaging prowess of this monster –
Detailed features of Asus ZenFone 3 Zoom Camera
Dual Camera Setup
Dual rear cameras is the latest trend in high-end segment of smartphones. iPhone 7 Plus, LG G5, LG V20, Huawei Mate 9, Huawei P9 are some top-of-the-line examples of this dual-camera tech. ZenFone 3 Zoom is the latest addition to this league. It combines two entirely new camera systems – a 12 Megapixel ƒ/1.7 aperture, wide-angle lens with ASUS SuperPixel™ Technology is primed to capture everyday scenes, especially in dark environment; and a 12 megapixel 2.3x optical zoom for high-quality close-ups from farther away. Switching between dual cameras is very fast – you can either use a single one or the combination to enable the amazing depth-of-field (bokeh) effect. The camera glass is protected by Gorilla Glass coating.
New improved Tri-Autofocus (TriTech+) System
ZenFone 3 Zoom’s camera is powered by the latest Sony IMX362 sensor with large 1.4µm pixel size and 6-element lens. The innovative dual-camera system comprises two 12MP cameras, one with a f/1.7-aperture, 25mm wide-angle lens and a second with a 59mm lens. Users can instantly switch from the 25mm primary camera to the 59mm camera, giving them a 2.3X optical zoom (upto 12X digital zoom) that is perfect for portraits and capturing distant subjects. 59mm focal length lens is also the first ever in a phone. An improved TriTech+ autofocus system automatically chooses among three autofocus technologies — Dual Pixel PDAF, subject tracking autofocus, and second-generation laser focus — depending on the situation to achieve accurate focus in just 0.03 seconds, even when photographing moving subjects. Besides optical and electronic image stabilization (OIS and EIS) empowers camera to take blur-free shots and video every time. There is also a RGB color-correction sensor for true-color photography, and true 4K UHD video recording.
Asus SuperPixel Technology
ZenFone 3 Zoom is also the first ASUS smartphone with SuperPixel camera technology that enables it to focus incredibly quickly and capture clear photos at night or in low-light environments. ASUS’ custom hardware and software enhancements boost sensor light-sensitivity by up to four times by intelligently adjusting ISO levels while shooting and applying noise reduction in post-shot processing. Asus claims that the SuperPixel technology in ZenFone 3 Zoom camera enables it to capture 2.5 times more light than Apple iPhone 7 Plus and 10-times that of an average smartphone. Which means brighter and more colorful photos in low light conditions.
Manual Camera Mode
ZenFone 3 Zoom also supports Manual mode for pro-level controls in Camera. Manual options include one-touch control over shutter speed, white balance, EV, ISO and metering. Besides it also allows you to capture pics in RAW format and provides the ability to switch instantly between the dual lenses for either 25mm or 59mm focal length. Note that the claimed RAW support will be available with Android 7.0 Nougat.
Front (Selfie) Camera
ZenFone 3 Zoom’ selfie camera does not have as much Megapixels as Oppo F1 Plus; still it is one of the best out there. The remarkable front-facing camera is made up of a 13 Megapixel Sony IMX214 sensor. It is also equipped with ASUS SuperPixel Technology which further enhances the light sensitivity up to 2 times. Screen Flash feature turns the entire screen bright white for good soft illumination in low-light conditions. Combined with the ZenUI Camera app’s unique Beautification and 140° Selfie Panorama modes, it captures selfies with great details, add instant glamor and ensure that every friend is in the frame.
