6 Best 4G VoLTE Android phones under Rs.15,000 ($220) in India

With the launch of Reliance’s Jio 4G services in September, 2016, demand of 4G LTE phones suddenly skyrocketed in India. Prior to Jio rollout, 4G LTE network penetration was very limited in India mainly confined to big metro cities of the country. Thus nobody cared about the 4G support in phones till then. However Jio’s “everything (4G data, voice calls, SMS etc) free and unlimited” offer made “4G” phones a hit overnight. It made 4G support a bare necessity in any phone. Everyone now wants a 4G supporting phone to avail the amazing free Jio services.

What is VoLTE?

As you may know every Jio service is based on high speed 4G LTE network connection. Be it data, chatting, music/video streaming or voice calls to other networks, everything works only when the data connection is On. Jio network uses LTE data to make and receive voice calls – a function popularly called as VoLTE (Voice over LTE). VoLTE is an advanced functionality based on 4G network. Thus a 4G phone may or may not support VoLTE depending upon the SoC it has. Almost all phones (barring a few high-end ones) launched before 2016 do not have native VoLTE support.

Reliance was aware of the fact that very few phones natively supported VoLTE at the time of Jio launch in India. So they introduced an app called Jio4GVoice which provides the VoLTE function in any 4G supporting phone. Still anything native is better than an extra running app. So now consumers are looking for phones with both 4G + VoLTE capabilities. Realizing this point, phone makers have started launching 4G + VoLTE smart phones even in budget segment.

Best 4G VoLTE (Mid range) Android phones (Rs.10,000-15,000)

5. Motorola Moto G Plus 4th Gen.

Moto G Plus 4th Gen. is definitely one of the best phone of this list in terms of camera, speedy updates and quality of hardware. Due to almost stock Android builds, Moto phones now get Android updates along with the Nexus/Pixel line of devices. So this Moto has also got Android Nougat. It is also one of the two phones of this list with 16 MP primary camera with high-end features like Laser AF and PDAF. Besides there is also a pro/manual mode in camera app for full control over camera settings – something which is found only in high-end premium phones.
Other specs –

Overall a good phone from a reliable and top brand Motorola. If camera and brand is your priority then go for it. However CPU is a bit let down.

6. Redmi Note 4 (4GB RAM variant)

Redmi Note 4 succeeds the hugely popular Redmi Note 3 but unfortunately (barring 4 GB RAM) it does not matches the old Note in many departments (you can see the comparison between the two in this post). Have a look at it’s specifications –

Redmi Note 4
Snapdragon 625 SoC (2.0 GHz Octacore – a newer power efficient mid-range processor)
4 GB RAM
64 GB internal memory (expandable upto 128GB)
5.5 inches Full HD IPS LCD display, 2.5D curved glass
13 MP BSI CMOS f/2.0 primary camera sensor
5 MP front camera
4100 mAh Battery with fast charging, Finger print scanner, light metal body with thin antenna lines
Price – Rs.12,999

Buy now at Flipkart
So if you are a Xiaomi fan then go for it otherwise look for other options.

Note – All of these phones natively support VoLTE so we have not mentioned it in individual specifications. Also the phones are not listed in any order of “good, better or best” – the sequence is random. You can go for any of them – it’s all upto individual needs, choice and preferences. For example If I have to make a choice out of these then I will decide like this – being a power user, a high-end CPU and camera quality are my main priorities, brand value and style matters least to me. So Lenovo Z2 Plus is my first choice then Coolpad Cool 1 then InFocus Epic 1 then Lenovo Vibe K5 Plus then Moto G Plus then Redmi Note 4. Now what about you?
