Samsung Galaxy S5 gets “Smart Manager” app via OTA software update

Samsung’s last year flagship, Galaxy S5 international variant (SM-G900H) is now getting a software update in India and some other countries. The OTA update is a large one (at just over 388 MB in size) with build date July 28 and is still based on Android 5.0 Lollipop. Apparently it is one of those “Bug-fix and Performance improvement” updates such devices often get to iron out firmware issues.

Change-log
There is no cosmetic or otherwise change we have noticed so far except a newly installed app called “Smart Manager”. It appeared after the update completed and phone rebooted. Smart Manager is actually a new System maintenance app from Samsung. From interface and functions it looks similar to the famous “Clean master” app. And after going through options it became clear that “cleaning function” of Smart Manager is indeed powered by Clean Master. Besides the security module of Smart Manager is partly powered by McAfee security. Here is a brief overview of Smart Manger functions –

Battery
Battery function takes you to the “Settings – General – Battery” menu.

Storage
Storage function consist of the “Settings – General –Storage” menu plus options to delete “Unnecessary files” and user data. This option is powered by Clean Master.

RAM
It is a RAM cleaning function which closes the running apps and processes. There are two tabs under RAM function – Background Apps and Manage Apps. By using these functions you can end the running apps or uninstall/disable un-necessary apps.

Device Security
Using this function you can scan the phone for malware or any other security threat (and then remove it if found). Besides you can also install My Knox app to “create a secure and isolated space on the device where you can do your work” as Samsung puts it.

Besides a one-click “Clean All” function button is also there for a quick performance boost.

How to update?
If you have a Galaxy S5 (SM-G900H, unlocked Indian/International variant) then check for the System software update via “Settings – General – About device – Software updates – Update now”. Phone will check and download the update if available. Alternatively you can also use Samsung Kies (PC software) to update the phone via computer.

    Hi,

    after the mentioned update I got the Smart Manager app, but there is an issue with it.
    Pretty much every time I wake up my screen I see a notification- “Smart Manager has stopped working”, and I have to click “OK” before I proceed using my device.

    I tried to find the app in the App store or Galaxy Apps so I can either remove or update it, but I can not.

    Please help!

      We have no such issue with the app. It looks like you had a corrupt install of Smart Manager (or the whole update). As Smart Manager is installed as a System app you can not uninstall or disable it (you can remove it but the phone must be rooted for this). A phone reset may also solve this issue (but there is no guarantee).

        Hello there!
        It seems it was not only Stan and Eddie who had this problem. I have a Galaxy S5 and this app was automatically installed during a system update. Since then I also get this message saying “smart manager has stopped working” all the time!!! I tried to uninstall it (as it doesn’t really make any real difference to have it – I can check my battery and memory status using settings) but it was not possible. What should we do?

    Hi,
    I’m having the same problem that Roohi described, everytime I start a new app or get a phone call i get the annoying notification “smart manager has stopped working”?? I did’nt know I had it and I will like for sure have it uninstalled. I also get it when men alarm goes of and it takes time to shut it down cause of this. Been close to trow the phone against the wall cause of this smart manager…I want a unsmart manager that doesnt do anything. What was wrong with the procedure you when you want to close all of the active programs? That worked for me if the phone was working slow.
    Anyways could you please help me out with this??
    I refuse to go over to Iphone but all my friends are insisting on that!

    Since smart manager was installed during a software update I have had many problems. My phone keeps freezing and the oy way I can sort it is by taking the battery out which u can do a few times a day. Like others I am considering switching to iPhone unless this app can be uninstalled. There is no reason for this app whatsoever!!!!

    Same problem here! Phone not respondig to touchscreen when a call comes in, thus making me unable to answer. OK, I know this is as much a computer as a phone, but it IS a point to have the possibility to use the S5 as a phone.

    When call is missed, I get the message “Smart manager has stopped” and after pressing “OK” I can use the S5 as a phone again (and – of course – call back).

    Why does Samsung distribute non-functioning programs like this? Is it a hidden attack from Apple???

      On a serious note, Samsung and other big manufacturers make big-bucks by cramming such bloatwares into software updates. Such updates are useless most of the times.

    Fantastic….same problem here…it freezes all the time, I cannot take calls sometimes…have to wait…go in say OK to smart manager has stopped and then call back..and back to factory probably wont work since this app is part of the new update. Anyone tried it?

      I reset the phone and also sent it to Samsung. They didn’t do anything except for reflashing the firmware. Didn’t help anything, it still crashes.

    Same problem. “Smart manager has stopped working”. Increasingly frustrating as well. Once or twice a day, fine, but it happens all the time! I haven’t found a single solution but tons of ppl with the same issue. No fix. Wth…

    Same problem! Some apps suddenly restarts. When writing the keyboard suddenly disappears. Have tried a reset, but the problem is still there

    Unfortunately my app works !! I keep getting notification upon notification that Twitter is slowing down my device ! The notification is a whistle sound just the same as my text messages and other things. I get these notifications any time day or night and sometimes have to get up in the night to check that it isn’t an urgent text!!

    I cannot uninstall. I’ve tried to force stop but it starts up again. You cannot stop the notifications or make them silent !

    Just been on to Samsung support who insist you can force stop the thing and they are ringing me Monday to do a remote working on my phone and sort the problem out. Will be very interesting to see what they say as I believe they won’t be able to do anything and will just tell me to do factory reset – the usual last resort that has never resolved any of my phone problems.

    They need to do a software update and quick !

    I have the problem, too, on my S5. I didn’t know I had this app until it crashed. And it keeps on crashing…

    Exactly the same issue with my S5 with lollipop 5.0 in DK! Why in the name of god does Samsung release such buggy software updates. Since the last few minor updates my phone has been slow, buggy and apps that stop working. I am so tired of this. I have no confidence in their deliverrance of stable updates. My phone ran much better on kitkat 4.4.4. I am seriously NOT buying a samsung again, as I have also seen these buggy update patterns on previous models.

    Same problem with mine! It’s a nightmare! My functions are not working properly. . Answering calls is a nightmare. .. sound is a new issue… just set my alarm for the morning and i have no alarm sound volume. .. despite all volumes im maximum. How the fck am I going to wake up without a reliable alarm! Oh and keep getting a split frozen screen!

    Misses about 50-75% of incomming calls because of “smart manager has stopped” on my S5.

    Please get it fixed ASAP, or give us the opportunity to uninstall !!!!

    Try deleting the cache partition by booting the phone in recovery mode (power up + Home +Power button while booting). This should help.

    I have had the same problem since the update.
    Every time i wake the screen I get the massage. When I get a call the massage blocking for answering the call.
    Pleas fix it.

    Hi everybody! I have the same problem as most of the people above. I maye have an idea what could happend when we all updated to Lollipop 5.0. I updated my S5 to 5.0 in Samsung Kies application as soon as Lollipop come out, and not via update in my phone.

    I think we all have updated our phones in that way. We wanted to have the Lollipop update first of all and use Samsung Kies to do it before everyone else. I have some friends who also have S5 and they updated via the phone update and not via Kies.

    I think i get back to kitkat 4.4.4 and then use my phoneupdate to install Lollipop 5.0 and hope this will solve my problem.

    Here’s a tip for all of you who have been literally thrust with this ** GREAT SAMSUNG APP **.
    Go to the Battery App.-> DETAIL. You will see all your downloaded apps either listed in
    A Always Power Saving
    B Automatically Optimising
    C Disabled for.
    If you rarely use an app say Flashlight when you rarely use the Camera..place such apps under ” Always Power Saving ”
    If you use an App such as Google Keep. list it under ” Always Optimising ”
    If ou are using any such app which keeps on regularly updating eg. ” Guage Battery Meter ” or ” Edge Clock ” or ” Last Call Widget ” , please ensure to list it under ” Disabled For ” Infact any app which keeps regularly updating say downloaded clocks or apps which suggest your last call, etc, they should be listed here.
    I noticed that some of my apps stopped refreshing and some stopped working after I listed them under A or B. Now after shifting them to C ” Disabled for ” they seem to be working fine.

      My S5 doesn’t allow me to click DETAILS in the battery app…
      I have the same problem with Smart Manager and tried to delete the app, wasn’t possible. But my S5 also informs me that other apps have stopped. Like Google Play and some other that I don’t remember right now.

    I ‘ve had this problem too:
    That is: Could not answer incoming calls. Phone blocked until ringing stopped, and then clear message «Smart Manager Has Stopped». Then unlock the phone and of course call back!
    On my S5 the reason for this was related to my microSD-card. The holder for this card is weak! The SD-card had poor connection, to and from.. After securing this card and a restart the problem has disappeared.

    So this is an error that Samsung won’t fix in the near future? An error that makes the phone useless? Great. I’ve been happy with Samsung for a long time, but I’m getting closer to looking for something else to be honest. Loads of good competition out there for Samsung, but maybe they are peaking them self with their big heads.

    I’ve downloaded this update. …now I wish I hadn’t. Can someone explain why it’s draining my battery when I thought the idea was to maybe save it? Unless I’m wrong.
    I can’t wait to go back to Sony. Worst choice ever getting an s5.

    I am having an issue with this new update my battery drains much faster than before the update. Now after only 2 hours it drops to 50% before it lasted for even 4 hours to get 70 or 60%

    I am extremely upset about this update. I have tried “Clear Cache” then “force stop” and then the other way around. Everything I reboot it’s back on. “Disable” button there but grey. Wtf. Been a Samsung purchaser for years. Ready to toss my S5 and S4 in the wood chipper and go to another brand.

    Makes spending over $600 on a phone like flushing it if this Bloat ware and updates make it useless!

    my first Samsung phone, I am on my second galaxy s5, they go bad after 9 months. I am currently at the time period on this second phone and I am having all kinds of issues since Smart manager updated on to my phone. I get black screen and takes upwards of 10 to 15 to get a screen. Tired all the fixes I found on the web finally called my carrier they said to go to best buys as they have Samsung reps. they reinstalled and it worked for about 4 hours then back to the same black screen issue. this app is embedded so it cannot be disabled. for the price you pay for these phone it would be nice that they would work for more than a year and let us choose the apps we want.
    I am due for a new phone and will not be getting another Samsung.
