LG G4 is getting a software update (V20h) with October Android Security Patch

LG G4 gets Software Update (V20h)

A system software update is available now for LG G4 in India and many other countries (for unlocked H818 variants). This update brings the October Android Security Patch to the last year’s LG flagship. The OTA (Over The Air) update is a hefty 469 MB download with software version V20h and build date October 19, 2015. The firmware is still based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. We received the OTA update notification for our LG G4 (H818N dual SIM Indian variant) yesterday. The notification gives vague details about the update (as seen in the screenshot)

Update summary
1. Phone usability and functionality has been further improved
2. Software: Improved stability for apps

LG G4 v20h SW Update

We also checked for the update via LG Bridge (the new LG PC Suite for G4) and LG Mobile Support Tool – they also showed the update of over 1 GB. This huge size difference is due to the fact that LG Bridge/PC Suite and LG Mobile Support Tool download the whole firmware and then install it while OTA update consists of only the updated components. However there is no difference in terms of software version or features, whatever way you chose to update the phone.

Change-log

This is definitely one of those routine “security, bug-fix and performance improvement” Android software updates which Google/OEMs now roll out regularly. It contains the October Android Security Patch. As you may know, Google now releases Android Security Patch (a collection security fix found in Android OS) as a software update on a monthly basis. Unfortunately LG is pretty slow in passing these updates to their devices. This is evident by the fact that LG G4 got this updates after a long gap of over 7 months (7 months is like “ages” in today’s fast paced mobility world). Prior to this update it had Android Security Patch build of February 2016. In comparison Samsung is very quick to deliver updates to their phones. LG has to look into this aspect seriously to gain the trust of consumers.

How to update?

OTA update
If you have not received the OTA update notification yet then check for it manually via Settings – General – About phone – Common – Update Center – Software Update – Check now for update. Phone will check for the update and notify you if available for your variant. It may take some time to reach all LG G4 variants so you will have to wait a bit longer for the update depending upon your country/carrier.

LG Bridge
You can also update your G4 via LG Bridge, the new LG PC Suite for LG G4. Refer to this post to know more about LG Bridge.

LG Mobile Support Tool
LG Support Tool for mobile is an official LG software to update/flash LG phones. You can also use this application to update LG G4 to the latest available software. Read this post to know how to use LG Mobile Support Tool.

LG makes good hardware, no doubt about it. But promised its user to feel laggard always in terms of updates. LG g4 is its flagship phone but still failed to Update it with VOLTE. Whereas even Company like Intex, karbonn are far better than LG in terms of software updates or patches. I am Sorry LG dont feel offended as you are being compared with Karbonn and Intex and not with Samsung. LG is running fast to meet the fate of Blackberry/Nokia.

Oh it’s sad you are having such problems. Our G4 is running fine without any such issue. May be a hard reset will work for you.

I totally agree ashwini very poor LG not releasing Volte update for LG G4.
When hardware is supported then why is it so difficult for LG to release an ota update????
I will never buy high end LG mobile.
If any LG marketing person reading this reply u need to take it seriously losing high end customers in such a competitive market is very bad impression for company.

My LG G4 is working fantastic before and after this update (today on 03-01-2017). I have been using this for more than one year. Great experience with a good price. Still I’m reluctant to go for a new device whether it is Samsung S7 or iphone7. LG G4 still perform wonderful..!!
