Microsoft announces Surface Pro 3 in New York City
“Bigger is better” is perhaps the new motto of mobile-device makers. Be it the smartphone segment or the tablet section, manufacturers are stretching the boundaries of physical size of devices with every new announcement – thus phones are rapidly transforming into phablets and tablets are growing to netbook proportions. Microsoft proved this by announcing the next generation of Surface series of Windows tablets at a press event in New York City on May 24, 2014. The new Surface Pro 3 slate with its 12 inches display and impressive specs, aims to replace your regular laptop as the primary device on the go. Besides, with S Pro 3 Microsoft also targets Apple’s iPad which is currently the number one selling tablet worldwide. Design-wise, Surface Pro 3 is not much different than its predecessor however it is slimmer at just 9.1 mm and lighter weighing just 800 grams. Specs-wise S Pro 3 packs the latest Intel Haswell processors (4th gen. Core CPUs) – according to Microsoft, it is the slimmest device ever to pack a Core CPU. Here is a brief description of specs and salient features of Surface Pro 3 –
CPU – Intel’s latest generation of Haswell processors – one Core i3, 2 Core i5 and 2 Core i7 – total 5 variants
OS – Windows 8.1 Pro
Display – 12 inches, 2160×1440 pixels resolution capacitive multi-touch display
Camera – dual 5 Megapixels (front and rear) cameras capable of recording 1080p full-HD videos
Others – A high precision and pressure sensitive Surface Pen (Galaxy Note type stylus), multi-position kickstand to work at different angles, a new slim type cover which automatically adjust its position according to kickstand’s position, for comfortable typing, a battery which Microsoft claims will last 9 hours of web browsing

Pre-orders for Surface Pro 3 have started in US – it will be available from June 20 here. However other countries will have to wait till August to grab the slate. Price is variable according to the variant – from $799-1949 (launch price in US).
Overall Surface Pro 3 is sleek, beautiful, powerful and a useful tablet to own but the price is quite on the higher side. It can be understood considering the hardware it packs inside this small and thin size. Still Microsoft must review their pricing to stay in (or overpower the) competition.
