Symbian Nokia Store app gets a surprise update
Nokia Store app recently got an update (v3.34.013) in Symbian^3/Belle phones. This came as a big surprise for Symbian users. It’s been a long time since we have covered anything related to Symbian at this blog but this update compelled us to do so. OK we all know that Symbian is dead now and Microsoft is busy erasing everything related to Nokia. But it looks like they still have a few guys around for Symbian software development. We have a Nokia N8 and Nokia 808PureView which serve as reference camera phones for our mobile camera comparison tests. None of the two have received any update (app or system) since almost a year. And suddenly Nokia Store app notified at launch that “there is a new version available”. This update stands at 5.1 MB and bumps up Nokia Store version to 3.34.013 (earlier version was 3.30.018)
Despite the craze of Android there are still millions of old Symbian phones in use around the world mostly in developing countries. But these devices are now officially end-of-life products, running “last” versions of OS/apps. Microsoft has already discontinued further development of Symbian software and its native apps. Nokia Store app has been closed for developers – no new apps are allowed. Fortunately some third-party Symbian apps are still getting updates like WhatsApp, Opera Mini, UC Browser and Facebook java app. Now this Nokia Store update adds a native app to this list as well.
How to update? – Just launch the “Store” app from phone menu (phone must be connected to internet) – wait for a while as the app will notify you about the available update (as shown in the screenshot) – touch the update button, new app will be downloaded and installed – in our case it took a long time (over 5 minutes) for the update process to complete. You can also directly download the updated app from here and install in your phone.
No official change-log is available and the new app does not differ visually from the older one. The only difference we noticed was that of the improved speed and responsiveness in general operation. So if you are still using a Nokia Symbian^3/Belle phone and care for the updates then fire up Nokia Store app and get the update (which is most likely the last one).
