Samsung Galaxy S4 announced – Specifications and features at a glance

Finally Samsung unveiled the most advanced and much anticipated Android superphone – the Galaxy S4 – in a scheduled star event (UNPACKED 2013) at the historic Times Square of New York on Friday, March 15, 2013. The all new Galaxy S4 (I9500) is the latest member of the hugely popular Galaxy S series having all the features to be a super-flagship. It’s no secret that Galaxy series devices turned Samsung from an almost bankrupt company to the number one mobile manufacturer worldwide within a span of just five years. Millions of GS units sold worldwide, raking in billions for the Korean giant. Considering all this, Samsung values their S series flagships the most, using top-notch hardware and premium technology to craft these gems.

This time too Samsung has worked hard to improve the new device in every department (except external design which unfortunately remains the same as that of Galaxy S3). Many new and innovative features have been incorporated in Galaxy S4 – some of which are really useful while some are almost useless. Here is a brief overview of its specifications and features –

CPU – Quad-core 1.6 GHz Cortex A15 plus 4 Cortex-A7 cores running at 1.2 GHz (PowerVR SGX 544MP3 GPU); Exynos 5 Octa chipset

Quad-core, 1.9GHz Krait CPU (with Adreno 320 GPU) in some regions along with Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset

Display – 5 inches, 1080 x 1920 pixels (440ppi), super AMOLED screen with Gorilla Glass 3 protection

Camera13 Megapixels rear camera with AF, LED flash; 2.1MP front camera (both capable of 1080p @30fps video recording). Full HD video can be recorded with both cameras at the same time.

Some new sensors like barometer (pressure), temperature, humidity and gesture have been added along with the conventional ones

Android v4.2.2 (JellyBean) with latest TouchWiz UI

Others –

Wireless battery charging (in some variants and markets) – GS4 is the first Samsung device with Wireless charging capability following Nokia Lumia WP8 phones

Drama Shot and Cinema Photo apps – These are some cool imaging apps utilizing the powerful camera. Drama Shot lets you capture a burst of photos and then combine them into a single image while Cinema Photo shoots a video and then lets you select any part of video to create a GIF image out of it.

Smart Pause and Smart Scroll features are new features in S4 which track eye movements to control some phone functions. S Pause can pause video playback if you see away from the phone screen while Smart Scroll can scroll a web page tracking your eye movement. Front camera is utilized in these functions.

There is also a new S Health app which (along with compatible S Band and Heart Rate monitor accessories) can help you track running steps and calories. Besides, it can also measure temperature and humidity of your surrounding atmosphere using the built-in sensors.

Interestingly Galaxy S4 also boasts of Infra Red hardware (which became extinct along with Symbian) to use the phone as a universal remote control. Earlier HTC incorporated IR in HTC One – SGS4’s strong competitor.

Samsung Galaxy S4 (in White and Black) will hit the retail stores worldwide in April 2013, though pre-booking has already started in many countries.

Expected launch price of SGS4 – US$ 700 (unlocked)
