Xiaomi recently started seeding MIUI 8 (based on Android 6.0.1 MM) as an OTA software update to many phones including Redmi Note 3. It may not be available to all the devices at the same time. As usual OTA update rolls out in phases due to server issues – some devices will get it earlier while others have to wait a bit. However the good news is that you don’t have to wait for the OTA update to arrive for your Redmi Note 3 to get the taste of new MIUI 8 and Android MM. Here is an alternative method to download and install the official update manually. Just follow the steps described below.
Warning – OTA update process does not affect the phone data as it updates the system software only, while manual update process may delete user data. So it is recommended to back up your important phone data first before proceeding further with the manual update.
Also make sure that the phone battery is sufficiently charged (over 60% recommended) so that the phone does not run out of power during the update process.
Steps to Update Redmi Note 3 to MIUI 8 (Android 6.0.1 MM)
Download the update package – Redmi Note 3 MIUI 8 v6.9.9 Global ROM (about 1.2 GB zip file) from here
Copy the zip file to phone’s internal memory (if the file was downloaded in computer). Skip this step if the file was downloaded in phone itself
Now go to “Tools – Updater” in the phone
In the Updater app go to Menu (3 Dots) – Choose update package
Browse and select the update zip file you downloaded – update process will start – phone will be unusable during the update
Wait for the process to complete – it will take some time and may be a couple of restarts so just chill! Finally the phone will boot into the all new MIUI 8 (Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow).
Note that the new software will take some time (say 2-3 days) to “settle” and “stabilize”, so do not worry about early hiccups like slow performance or fast battery draining. It will settle down in a while.
