WhatsApp for Symbian updated to version 2.16.57

Update (July 20, 2017) Finally WhatsApp stopped working in all Symbian S60 phones on July 18, 2017. The version update (2.16.57) described in the following older post happened to be the last Symbian S60 version of WhatsApp.

WhatsApp for Symbian got an update to version 2.16.57 recently. WhatsApp is one of the very few apps left now for Symbian which are still getting official updates. Rest of the app publishers have stopped the development of their apps for “now-dead” mobile OS. This is indeed a sad state of affairs considering the fact that millions of users (especially in developing countries of Asia and Africa) are still using Symbian^3/Belle based phones. Microsoft has already discontinued every online service related to Symbian including the original Nokia Store website and app. Thus it is not possible now for developers to update any app via Nokia (Ovi) Store.

What is new in WhatsApp 2.16.9?
No official change-log is available for the new version. However we have noticed a new message displaying under chats which reads “Messages you send to this chat are now secured with end-to-end encryption. Click for more info“. Touching on this message further says “……which means Whatsapp and 3rd parties can’t read them”. A “Learn more” link is also given at the end of this message. This end-to-end encryption feature is available when the latest version of Whatsapp is installed on both ends (receiver and sender). So now you can be rest assured about the privacy of your messages sent or received.

How to update? – If you have a Symbian phone with WhatsApp installed then launch it (phone must be connected to internet) – WhatsApp has a built-in automatic update-check function – it will notify you of the available update. Besides you can also manually check for update via Menu – Settings – Updates – Check for updates – wait for a while as the app checks and shows the available update – if available select the “Install update” button – wait as the new version is downloaded and installed. Alternatively you can also download the latest version of WhatsApp for Symbian sis file free from the official site.

Update (August 2017) – WhatsApp has removed the “Nokia/Symbian” download page from the official site. So if you want to download the sis file (new or old) now, please refer to this post for direct download links.

My phone nokia 6120c whatsapp not support why

        • Shoaib October 2, 2016 at 6:11 PM #

Nokia 6120 is a Symbian phone and is mentioned in the list of supported devices at the official https://www.whatsapp.com/nokia page. Perhaps the problem is with your phone – a hard reset (type *#7370# at the dialer) may fix this issue.

  6. Laura July 1, 2016 at 10:00 PM #

Hmmm those people are going to lose so many customers especially in Ghana and Nigeria.

  7. late808 October 2, 2016 at 6:20 PM #

I have already uninstalled whatsapp from my 808. It seemed to deplete my battery daily and was always on. At least facebook messenger works.

    • Shoaib October 2, 2016 at 6:39 PM #

Due to it’s always ON nature Whatsapp uses a lot of battery. However you may use Whatsapp modifier app in Symbian to close down Whatsapp anytime. I use it and it saves a lot of battery. This allows us to use Whatsapp only when we launch it just like other apps.

Hi, i was aware there was an app to close it but because of the short life on symbian of whatsapp decided not to bother. The 808 is no longer my main daily phone to be honest but i do take it out when i go family weddings and other functions were i want quality photo and video memories. I use cutetube quite a lot as it has a download feature which allows me to then use dlna to watch youtube videos on the tv.

Right said Sir almost everyone has moved over now. I also occasionally use N808 and N8 now just because I love their cameras (and of course Symbian!). Thanks for your feedback!

pls i think the whatsapp company should not discountinue #Whatsapp from”2017″ next year becus, some countries do not have new phones & even if they have,, not all people can afford it, pls think of this, & also think of the loss whatsapp company will get of over 3million whatsapp users stop using whatsapp, pls let whatsapp be supported for both the old phones and new once. #Think of all these & concider

May 2017, with a simple hack I’ve been continuing to use whatsapp with nokia symbian s60 phone, works fine though videos stopped sending beginning May ’17. Version 2.16.54 and ignore any updates.

So this hack has worked for nearly 6 months, any other hacks available to continue using whatsapp on symbian s60?

    • Shoaib May 21, 2017 at 12:44 PM #

There is no hack dear! June 30, 2017 is the new deadline for WhatsApp for Symbian end-of-support (read this post to know more). It was December 2016 earlier, but was later extended for six months more. So you can use WhatsApp upto June 2017 in a Symbian phone without above adjustment. Because WhatsApp is a internet based app, you can’t trick it by adjusting date etc. Further more their updates are mandatory which means you can’t avoid an update for a long time. So once their server shut down next month it will be all over buddy!

@tanuj: nokia asha 311 is S40 ! You can still use whatsapp till 31-12-2018. Lucky you! :-), poor me! Perhaps I should buy a Nokia C3-01, same S40

    • Shoaib July 6, 2017 at 2:00 AM #

Strange! I also have Nokia N8 and version 2.16.57 installed and working fine. There is no update notification still as on June 7,2017.

  15. Koala July 4, 2017 at 2:07 AM #

My Nokia C5 (S60) still works, the whatsapp site still says it is supported when I enter the type: https://faq.whatsapp.com/en/s60/21099118. Only annoying thing is they stalk me with popups that de app isn’t supported any more due 30-06-2017. But it still works…

    • Shoaib July 6, 2017 at 2:05 AM #

Yes fortunately it still works in my Nokia N8! But I think WhatsApp will soon issue a mandatory update to disable the app in Symbian S60 phones. Until then keep using it.
